How You Can Be the Change in America's Food System

My Journey into Homesteading.

Hello and welcome to Carlisle Bee Homestead.

I am starting a newsletter to chat more about how I got started in homesteading and what keeps me going.

As someone, who had ZERO experience in the world of growing and raising food,

I have learned a few things along the way.

My story begins as follows:

It was the end of the year 2019, my husband and I were newly married, and I was devastated at the inhumane treatment of farm animals.

Becoming aware of the way animals are treated for Americans to eat meat disturbed me.

Instead of turning to veganism or vegetarianism, I sought better sources for the meat we consumed.

It was around this time that my husband wanted to try the carnivore diet.

So, we were looking for those certified humane, local, and grass-fed labels.

After this radical change in the meat we ate and awareness of what BigAg (conventional agriculture industry) was doing to our food,

I started to become more and more interested in becoming closer to the lives that were laid down for us to eat.

A seed was planted. I wanted to:

  • raise farm animals,

  • know how to humanely harvest/sacrifice farm animals

  • how to butcher the meat as well.

Our visit to Be Love Farm in Vacaville further enlightened me.

  1. Reading Dirt to Soil by Gabe Brown taught me how to start.

  2. Watching YouTube videos of Justin Rhodes showed me the ways of permaculture.

  3. Reading Joel Salatin’s work educated me on how to homestead regeneratively.

FOR YOU, the consumer, I encourage YOU to turn your attention, toward the food crisis conventional farming is creating.

With these four keys, YOU TOO can change how America produces food:

  1. Be Aware and Informed

  2. Become Educated

  3. Make Changes With Your Dollars $

  4. Be the Change

This brings me to the close of how it all began in 2020.

Stay tuned for the next part of my journey into homesteading…
